OptTek Systems, Inc. utilized a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund OptFolio, state-of-the-art software developed to significantly enhance capital budgeting and finance decisions. OptFolio incorporates risk and uncertainty directly into the decision-making process, thereby enabling a virtually infinite number of what-if questions to be asked and answers sorted and prioritized with accuracy and speed. This paper begins with a discussion of the goals and objectives for NSF’s funding of OptFolio via an SBIR grant. Next, OptFolio is described in detail, including screen shots indicating its input screens and practical use. Following this description, four detailed examples are provided spanning the following industries: 1) Petroleum and Energy; 2) Pharmaceuticals; 3) Information Technology; and 4) Telecommunications. The paper concludes with a large portfolio example and performance comparison of capital budgeting and finance decisions with and without OptFolio.
