Missile Defense Agency: Efficient Test & Evaluation (T&E) via Adaptive Sampling Simulation Optimization

The MDA needs to generate “heatmap” (response surface) analyses to understand the effectiveness of the Missile Defense System across a wide range of scenarios. Traditional approaches, like full enumeration or dense sampling, would require orders of magnitude more simulation runs than are computationally feasible.

U.S. Navy: Optimizing Hypersonic Weapon Performance

The U.S. Navy is working to rapidly develop and field hypersonic weapons, a process which requires analyzing a vast and complex parameter space to improve the Probability of Arrival (PA) and the Probability of Kill (Pk) of these new weapons.

NAVSEA / PEO-IWS: M&S Optimization for AEGIS Modernization

To counter rapidly evolving anti-ship cruise missile threats, the AEGIS Combat System (ACS) requires frequent software updates. Identifying the optimal software-only changes from a nearly unbounded set of configurable parameters is a significant challenge for analysts.

The integration of new Directed Energy (DE) weapons with traditional kinetic interceptors introduces a new layer of complexity to the battle management decision-making process for commanders in dynamic environments.

Continuous Test & Evaluation for AI-Powered Fire Control

When developing an AI agent for a critical system, like an Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) fire control, developers must continuously verify that the model behaves correctly and that new updates do not introduce regressions. Manually testing the AI’s performance across all possible engagement scenarios is impossible.

Stress Testing to Harden Simulation Models and Uncover "Brittle" Behavior

Simulation models can exhibit unexpected or “brittle” behavior at the edges of their performance envelope, creating vulnerabilities that are difficult to find with standard testing. Proactively identifying these failure points is critical for building trust in the model.

Rapid Calibration of AI Models to High-Fidelity Benchmarks

High-fidelity, physics-based simulations (e.g., 6DOF trajectory models) are often too slow for large-scale analysis. Faster AI-based surrogate models are needed, but they must be accurately calibrated to match the “truth” performance of the accredited high-fidelity model.

  • Intelligent Simulation Optimization with OptDef: We go beyond basic parameter sweeps. Our OptDef software acts as an intelligent “wrapper” around your simulation models (like AFSIM, STORM, CSTB, or custom Python models). It employs cutting-edge metaheuristic search algorithms (including Tabu Search and Scatter Search, developed by OptTek founders) to efficiently navigate vast, complex decision spaces. This allows us to find truly optimal system parameters, tactics, and operational plans that manual analysis or simpler modeling and simulation approaches would miss.
  • Efficient Experimentation via Adaptive Sampling: To maximize insights while minimizing costly simulation runs, we utilize a proprietary adapting sampling technique built on a specially adapted Kriging algorithm. OptDef intelligently creates a response surface and iteratively samples the next simulation point where uncertainty is highest. This machine learning approach builds highly accurate models of the entire trade space using orders of magnitude fewer runs than traditional methods. We further accelerate analysis using Difference Kriging to leverage results from prior studies. A variation of this approach can be used to efficiently identify boundary conditions as well.
  • Deep Analysis for Decision Support: Our toolkit enables sophisticated data science and operations research analysis:

    • Pareto Frontier Analysis: We identify non-dominated solutions to visualize the critical trade-offs between competing objectives (e.g., maximizing effectiveness vs. minimizing cost or risk). This empowers leaders with clear options for decision-making.
    • Scenario & Kill-Chain Analysis: Using advanced clustering algorithms applied to simulation outputs like “kill-chain vectors,” we identify the minimum set of test scenarios needed to achieve comprehensive coverage of test objectives, further optimizing T&E resources.
    • Simulation and AI/ML Model T&E: We provide a unique capability for the rigorous testing of simulation and AI/ML models within continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, using OptDef for automated regression testing, stress testing, and calibration against high-fidelity benchmarks.
  • Custom Integration & Software Development: Our expert software engineers perform modeling and simulation software development to create custom plugins and integration layers. This allows us to seamlessly incorporate the Government’s highest-fidelity tools directly into simulation optimization workflows, ensuring the most accurate and relevant results.
